We are proud to announce that the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs recently granted Dr. Naomi Sayre with a Career Development Award for her proposal entitled: “The Influence of ApoE4 on Signaling & Poor Outcome after Traumatic Brain Injury.”
Traumatic brain injury is considered the signature injury for service men and women who have fought in the recent wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Veterans with a history of traumatic brain injury have an increased incidence of long-term neurological problems. For these individuals, effective treatment strategies are often limited because scientists still have a poor understanding of the mechanisms and chronic effects associated with traumatic brain injury and aging.
Funding provided by the Career Development Award will enable Dr. Sayre to study the pathology of traumatic brain injury at the South Texas Veteran’s Health Care System and contribute to the medical community’s understanding of its long term effects. This will significantly improve the capability of physicians to treat veterans and other patients suffering from traumatic brain injury.
