Texas Neurosurgery Residency 4th Annual All-State Conference A Great Success

Drs. Raymond Sawaya and Daniel Yoshor, both from the Department of Neurosurgery at the Baylor College of Medicine, graciously hosted the 4th Annual Texas Neurosurgery Residency All-State Conference at the elegant Hotel ZaZa located in Houston’s downtown museum district.

There were a total of 80 participants representing all 6 Texas residency programs. The honored speakers included Dr. Kim Burchiel, Chairman of the Department of Neurosurgery at the Oregon Health and Sciences University at Portland and Dr. James Polk, Chief Medical Officer for Space Medicine from NASA.

The meeting was a complete success and was well received by all participants. Next year's meeting will be hosted by the Division of Neurosurgery at the University of Texas at Galveston. Please visit the photo gallery to see photos form this great event.

Curry Spice Could Aid In Stroke Recovery, Treatment

Dr. Lee Birnbaum was interview recently for a news story about the use of curry as an aid in stroke recovery.

A synthetic derivative of the curry spice turmeric, made by scientists at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies, dramatically improves the behavioral and molecular deficits seen in animal models of ischemic stroke and traumatic brain injury (TBI). Two new studies suggest that the novel compound may have clinical promise for these conditions, which currently lack good therapies.
