There were a total of 80 participants representing all 6 Texas residency programs. The honored speakers included Dr. Kim Burchiel, Chairman of the Department of Neurosurgery at the Oregon Health and Sciences University at Portland and Dr. James Polk, Chief Medical Officer for Space Medicine from NASA. The meeting was a complete success and was well received by all participants. Next year's meeting will be hosted by the Division of Neurosurgery at the University of Texas at Galveston. Curry Spice Could Aid In Stroke Recovery, Treatment Neurosurgery Admin Dr. Lee Birnbaum was interview recently for a news story about the use of curry as an aid in stroke recovery. A synthetic derivative of the curry spice turmeric, made by scientists at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies, dramatically improves the behavioral and molecular deficits seen in animal models of ischemic stroke and traumatic brain injury (TBI).
